AMERICANISM

 Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay.  Each year, more than 26,400 Freshmen (9th) through Senior (12th) grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.4 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$21,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least a scholarship of $1,000. Students interested in participating must submit their audio essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed 2025-2026 entry form, to their local participating VFW Post. Find your sponsoring local VFW Post as essays must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31

The 2025-26 theme is:
"How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

Patriot's Pen

Each year, more than 60,600 students in 6th through 8th grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen® annual youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Each first-place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Students interested in participating must submit their essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed 2025-2026 entry form, to their local participating VFW Post. Commander’s Corner – November 2025

Comrades, Supporters, and Community Partners,

As we enter November—a month of remembrance, reflection, and thanksgiving—I’m reminded of the profound strength that binds our Post together: service. From honoring our fallen on Veterans Day to supporting families during the holidays, this is a time when our mission shines brightest.

This month, VFW Post 280 continues to lead with purpose. We’ve strengthened sponsor relationships, expanded outreach through QR codes and digital platforms, and delivered critical support to veterans and their families. Our legislative advocacy and community service reports reflect not just duty—but heart.

I encourage each of you to stay engaged. Whether it’s volunteering at an event, sharing our newsletter, or simply checking in on a fellow veteran, your actions matter. Together, we preserve tradition while embracing innovation—ensuring our legacy lives on through meaningful impact.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for our Buddy Poppy Drive on November 8th from 9 AM to 3 PM. We’ll be stationed at all Hy-Vee locations in Columbia, Bass Pro Shops, and Westlake Ace Hardware on Worley. This annual tradition not only honors the sacrifices of our veterans but also helps fund essential support programs. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact the command staff or email info@vfwpost280.org—we’d love to have your support.

And as always, if you’re a veteran in need of assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Whether it’s navigating benefits, accessing resources, or simply needing someone to talk to, VFW Post 280 is here for you.

Let’s carry this momentum into November as we prepare to honor Veterans Day and continue building a stronger, more connected community.

Yours in service,

Ed Miller
